Whose Rights? Whose Freedoms?
In this depth study, we will focus on struggles for human rights, mainly in the united States and Australia. We will also consider some other areas, such as the Middle East and Southeast Asia. You will investigate how rights and freedoms have been ignored, demanded, or achieved in Australia and in the broader global context.
The unit commences with an exploration of the reasons behind the development of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which leads us into an examination of the civil rights movement in the United States and Australia. We will assess the long campaign waged by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples for civil, industrial, cultural heritage and land rights. The unit concludes with a careful reflexive question: What impacts have these movements had on the struggle for human rights in the contemporary period. |
