Read the information on the three-page extract from Dennet & Dixon (2008) and complete:
- The review questions at the bottom of p.349.
- Read the statement under the questions, "Historians differ in their attempts to explain Hitler’s foreign policy. Intentionalists argue that Hitler had long-term and detailed plans for war, whereas the Structuralist view is that Hitler had no specific plans, but just took advantage of opportunities as they arose" Dennett & Dixon, 2008, p.249).

- Returning to the pages above of Oxford's Key Features of Modern History, Describe the map in your notebook (this means going beyond saying 'it's a map'. You need to treat this as a historical source and work accordingly. Write down what it tells you about Hitler's expansion plans for Germany and what this means for our study.
- Provide a definition for:
- 'Intentionalists'
- 'Structuralists'
- Examine the three sources on p.350. and conduct a source analysis (Origin, purpose, motives, values, usefulness and reliability)
- Answer the two document study questions
- Decide which you agree with more–Structuralists or Intentionalists? DO you think that Hitler planned for an all-encompassing war all along? You'll need to justify your response using evidence.
- Provide an argument for why you agree with the position you do. Cite your sources and discuss them.
- Below is a PDF of the PowerPoint that you will be using in class. Take notes and using any other evidence you may find answer the focus question: How did Hitler's actions contribute to the outbreak of the Second World War?

Neville Chamberlain was the British prime minister from 1937 to 1940. He is forever associated with the policy of appeasement, which amounted to a concerted attempt by the democratic powers to avoid war by giving in to Hitler’s demands. History has been harsh in its judgement of both Chamberlain and appeasement.
